Surprisingly, only 25 paintings and 8 drawings can be attributed to Bosch with any certainty. From other documentary evidence in the meticulously maintained museums of Europe, we know that there were many more but for one reason or another these have been lost. It is further complicated by the fact that there were so many copies made. This was perfectly acceptable practice and most would have been authorised by Bosch himself via his own apprentices or other schools of art. Long before the days of mass-merchandising, it was a means of wider distribution and thus greater income for the artist.
The surviving works can be divided into the following categories;- triptychs; fragments of triptychs; individual panels and drawings. The following pages show these works and some details from them for greater clarity.
